How to Install Steel Gate Frames
STEP 1: MEASURE
Measure between your posts and allow the following clearances:
- Deduct 5 to 10 mm clearance each side of a SINGLE gate
- Deduct 5 to 10 mm clearance each side of a DOUBLE gate
as well as
10 to 15 mm clearance between the two halves.
Measure the height of your post and allow for clearance under the gate:
- If ground is level then 50 mm is plenty
- If ground is unlevel then larger clearance may be needed
STEP 3: ASSEMBLE
DECIDE how you want your gate to swing
INWARD swinging gates - fix hinges to BACK of post
OUTWARD swinging gates - fix hinges to FRONT of post
For single gates you will also need to decide if your gate
will
swing from the LEFT or RIGHT post.
Check ORIENTATION of hinges
Example - Left Hand Swinging In:
Hold hinge section of frame up against BACK of LEFT side post - check that:
- Plastic cap is at top
- Hinge opening faces down
If hinges are upside down you will need to REVERSE them

NOTE: for double gates you will need to
repeat the above process
for both the
LEFT and RIGHT hand posts.
WIDE GATES with diagonal brace -
assemble brace section first.
ASSEMBLE your frame as follows:
Place one side of frame on firm ground - slide rails on.
If necessary use mallet or block of wood to BUMP rails on -
don't use metal hammer.
Bump the other side of frame into place.
Secure frame together with
Self Drilling Screws supplied.
STEP 4: CLAD
Finish with your choice of cladding.
- Drill hole in the timber only
- Place self drilling screw in the hole in timber
- Screw directly into the steel frame using electric drill.
